Voice on Health Systems
Nutrition is a major lifestyle factor in health promotion and in the prevention and management of chronic conditions such as diabetes, heart disease, and cancer and related risk factors such as obesity. In the 2000 Health Accord all governments agreed primary health care reform is needed to reduce the burden of chronic disease in Canada.
For most Canadians, primary health care providers are the first point of contact with the health system. Primary health care is where health risks and problems are identified, interventions are provided, and long-term relationships are established with a team of health professionals. Dietitians are members of the primary health care team.
Dietitians of Canada actively supports change in the primary health care system. We believe Canadians should have access to the right services by the right professional, at the right time to address their health needs.
Specifically we encourage health planners, policy makers, and health professionals to:
- Emphasize disease prevention and health promotion
- Provide public funding for nutrition services in primary health care settings
- Ensure the supply of health professionals meets the health needs of the community
- Encourage and support collaboration amongst health professionals
- Monitor and evaluate services to ensure health needs are being met efficiently
