Standards of Practice |
|
Standards of Practice is an umbrella term that includes key documents which describe the responsibilities of each dietitian and define safe dietetic practice. These documents include professional standards, ethical guidelines, entry-level competencies, provincial regulations, standards of care, and practice guidelines.
Accreditation
Dietitians of Canada is the national accrediting organization for Baccalaureate Programs in Dietetic Education and Dietetic Internship/Practicum Programs. The accreditation review process evaluates how effectively education and training programs meet nationally established standards. Accreditation relies on a peer review process using trained surveyors who are members of Dietitians of Canada, who demonstrate professional leadership, and who have extensive experience in dietetic education or dietetic internship/practicum programs. To maintain accreditation status, a program must have an on-site accreditation review visit every 7 years.
Competencies
Competency statements specify the knowledge, skills and judgment necessary for acceptable performance of a dietitian as she/he begin their professional career. Internship/practicum programs use the Entry-Level Competencies (1996) as the basis for program design, management, and evaluation.
